Book review of Idia of the Benin Kingdom about Queen Idia of Benin Kingdom

by Mojirola Olukanni and Yona Oyegun-Masade

Have you heard about the first Queen Mother (Iyoba) of the Benin Kingdom?

This book written by Ekiuwa Aire and illustrated by Alina Shabelnyk brings to life a remarkable woman who left a legacy of strength, courage, music, and arts that still holds firm in the culture of Edo people to date.

Much like the Medici’s of Italy’s Renaissance, Iyoba Idia was a patron of the arts amongst the Edos of the Benin Kingdom and her influence can still be seen in their culture. Because of her military achievements and superior wisdom, bronze heads and ivory masks were made in her honour. Museums in Nigeria and around the world display these artworks today.

Idia of the Benin Kingdom is history and great storytelling in one book. The author takes the unique perspective of telling the story from Idia’s childhood. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and are sure to engender a sense of pride in young readers, particularly little girls.

Idia of the Benin Kingdom won the 2021 Children’s Africana Book Awards (CABA) for “Best Books for Young Children.” Since releasing Idia of the Benin Kingdom Ekiuwa Aire has gone on to publish three other African history children’s books under her Our Ancestors imprint.
