When I had children a few years ago I suddenly hit upon the problem that many African parents before me had encountered; I couldn’t find high quality books for children, written by Africans or with an authentic African perspective. Did I mention that my family is evenly split between big readers and dabblers? I’m a big reader. Predictably, I was determined that my children would help tip the scales in our favour but when my daughter began valorising the blue-eyed, blonde-haired protagonists, I came to a screeching halt. I knew I had to do more to find and help create books in which my beautiful, adventurous, intelligent black, African children could see themselves represented. And that is pretty much the ABC of African Books for Children.
